1. JobsStructure Tool

The tool decomposes per capita output growth into four components - contributions of productivity growth, employment growth, labor force growth, and change in working age population - using the Shapley decomposition method. The aim of the analysis is to understand the roles of productivity and employment growth in driving a country's overall growth. To understand a country's job structure, the tool calculates different sectors' contributions to aggregate productivity and employment growth. The tool helps the user make growth projections and analyze the consistency of such projections in terms of historical data as well as UN population projections. By using the Country Comparison feature, the user can select five countries and compare results.

2. Jobs and Structural Change Stata (JSCS) Tool

JDSS

The Jobs and Structural Change Stata (JSCS) Tool allows users to conduct growth and structural country diagnostics based on macroeconomic, sectoral value added and aggregate employment data with a focus on three questions:

  1. i. whether a target country’s structural features are aligned with what was historically observed at the target country’s current stage in the development process;
  2. ii. how a target country’s structural features diverge from a set of user-defined aspirational and structural peers;
  3. iii. whether a target country’s growth performance is resulting in structural shifts over time that contribute to more and better jobs for its people.

The tool generates a database for a target country and a user defined set of comparator countries and periods where country and period selection are not limited in number and can be easily modified and adjusted according to users’ needs. The tool draws from a large set of ancillary data sources, including the World Development Indicators (WDI), the Penn World Tables (PWT) and the Groningen Economic Transformation Dataset (EDT), to calculate growth and productivity decompositions and conduct comparisons across countries and periods. A sub-module that allows users to automatically update data sources when new data become available is included in the tool.

3. Jobs and Structural Change Excel (JSCS) Tool

JDSS

Jobs and Structural Change Excel (JSCE) Tool is the MS Excel based counterpart to the Jobs and Structural Change Stata (JSCS) Tool (see above). It allows users to conduct growth and structural country diagnostics based on macroeconomic, sectoral value added and aggregate employment data with a focus on two questions:

  1. i. how a target country’s structural features diverge from a set of user-defined aspirational and structural peers;
  2. ii. whether a target country’s growth performance is resulting in structural shifts over time that contribute to more and better jobs for its people.

The tool generates a database for a target country and up to 10 comparator countries over a maximum of 5 periods. Data is sourced from the World Development Indicators database.

4. Jobs Group Demography Tool

The tool helps generate tables and charts of population and employment data - both historical and projected. Users can apply population projections from UN data, or add their own projections. In the projection sheet, indicators and charts guide users in developing consistent projections not only in terms of population, but also in terms of working age population, dependent population, labor force, and employment. Where possible, the data and projections are split between male and female to highlight any gender gaps. Output charts include population pyramids.

5. Country Labor Tool

JDSS 

The Country Labor Tool provides standardized Labor Market analysis for an individual country. It helps users conduct a Jobs Diagnostic Guided Enquiry focusing on labor market supply side and outcomes.

The input data are nationally representative harmonized surveys from GLD, GMD, or I2D2 surveys.

The outputs of the tool present key labor market indicators ranging from labor force participation rates, types of employment, and unemployment to labor market outcomes for different population groups, figures, and regression tables to better understand how a country’s economy affects employment levels and workers. The results of the analysis are presented for each survey and over time in case of several surveys.

6. JOIN Benchmarking Tool

JDSS

The Excel-based JOIN benchmarking tool allows users to customize their analysis of JOIN indicators following the Jobs Diagnostic guided enquiry. Users can pick from 1,802 household surveys across 168 countries, analyze a country’s labor market development across time and compare results with up to 10 other countries.

Several predefined pivot tables allow tabulations of different subgroups such as gender, urban and rural areas, age groups, employment status, employment types, sectors, occupations, and education level. The tool enables not only the display of indicators for subgroups but also to interact these subgroup level indicators. Users can easily modify the pivot tables and figures including their design. They can, for example, change comparators, or add or change the subgroups they want to explore and interact ranging from urban versus rural to education level by gender.

7Jobs Group Context Tool

At_A_Glance

This tool compiles comparative policy indicators from WDI data for a range of macro, doing business and labor regulations. It was designed to complement the Jobs Diagnostics tools with relative policy performance, in order to facilitate the search for possible constraints to better jobs outcomes.

The tool lets the user view comparative data for a selected country - at a glance - from multiple databases. The user can select to compare policy performance against up to 15 countries.

8. Business Dynamics Tool

This tool uses formal private sector firm-level data to analyze jobs outcomes: employment, revenue, value added, labor productivity and labor costs. The tool creates a profile of private sector businesses hiring at least one employee, along with cross country comparisons. Standardized analysis is generated for aggregate trends in economic transformation from the formal private sector, and firm performance over time.

To assist the diagnostic of which types of firms are raising outputs, productivity and employment in which activities, the tool generates regression analysis of the determinants of firms' employment size, productivity and labor costs adjusting for firm characteristics such as age, sector, location and ownership. Outputs generated include graphs and tables.

9. World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) Benchmarking Tool

The tool uses data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) database and provides charts and matching tables of indicators. It is intended to help analysts diagnose the key policy, institutional, or market failures causing sub-optimal jobs outcomes at firms in a given country benchmarking with comparator countries. It is organized according to the Job Diagnostics framework (with indicators associated with diagnostic questions).

This tool covers all the countries and surveys from 2006 to the latest year in the WBES dataset. Some of the Indicators are part of the WBES standard indicators, and other indicators are newly developed by the Jobs Diagnostics team using raw data. These indicators primarily aim to understand constraints to labor demand by formal firms.
